I am writing to raise serious concern regarding the recent installation of a cycle hire area on Gloucester Drive, which has resulted in the loss of several residential parking spaces.

Thank you for raising your concerns on FixMyStreet regarding a new cycle hire bay on Gloucester Drive.
The statutory consultation period for this scheme ran for 21 days from 3rd October - 24th October 2025, during which any person or stakeholder was able to object to the scheme. No representations were received for this proposed location. A decision was then made to continue with the installation of this scheme, and this has now been approved through the Council’s formal delegated processes.
This has been achieved by way of a traffic management order (TMO) which has come into force to make the scheme permanent, and the bay has recently been installed. An internal consultation was also carried out with a range of teams. The parking stress at this location at this time was 61% which is under the 80% threshold. We acknowledge the concerns raised about parking availability and accept that local parking pressures can at times be frustrating for residents.
Overall, the impact of parking loss from this scheme has therefore been deemed as minimal. The removal of parking bays also fits in with the aims of the Council’s Transport Strategy, by re-allocating road space away from private vehicle use towards more sustainable measures.
Cycle hire bay locations are largely demand led and new locations are selected considering a number of factors relating to level of service, accessibility, network density, places of interest in the borough, road safety and potential impact on residents.
A number of different factors are considered when planning the siting of new cycle hire bays and Council officers undertake site assessments of proposed locations to ensure that the sites are safe and easily accessible, well-located and fit for purpose.
We appreciate the frustration felt by this issue, but hope that you can see the Council has taken your concerns seriously, while still providing a high quality service for cycle hire users.
