Request to replace comfortable bench seating

Sent to Hackney Council 5 minutes later
When this wide pavement area was relaid some comfortable bench seating was removed and not replaced. It's a really good spot to allow people to sit back from the traffic, either while waiting for a bus or just to rest themselves and enjoy being out. I hope Hackney Council will provide some comfortable public bench seating (with backs and armrests, for anyone needing more support to get up and down). This kind of provision makes for a kinder social community environment and actually means a lot, in a positive way, conveying welcome and meeting a need.

I received a lengthy letter from the Streetscene department explaining that omitting to replace comfortable bench seating was a deliberate decision, which I have written a lengthy reply to object to, as I feel it is quite wrong-headed and mean to have eliminated them. To me this is anti-social policy, and insulting to boot. In addition it is contrary to sensible guidance provided by the Older Persons Reference Group stressing the need for comfortable public seating for people with mobility issues of various kinds, not to speak of their lack precluding ordinary human relaxation at such a suitable spot. I would wish to see many more benches placed around the borough, and it grieves me that Streetscene don't value their welcome utility.
