Dear resident
Thank you for contacting Hackney Council.
Concerning your request for one way systems, the Council has generally moved away from the introduction of one-way streets and restrictions in response to issues such as those you raise, unless there are exceptional circumstances to support a case for doing so. This is due to the dis-benefits commonly associated with making roads one-way for traffic. The main disadvantages tend to be a reduction in accessibility for residents and key service providers (emergency and refuse services etc.), increased vehicle speeds due to a lack of opposing traffic, and the need for increased enforcement to prevent abuse and maintain safety. One-way systems and roads can be contentious because while some residents benefit, others do not and have to negotiate the wider area to get to or from their home. Depending on prevailing traffic patterns in the local area the creation of one-way streets can also sometimes result in an increase in traffic as routes become quicker and more desirable. The Council is also committed to promoting and encouraging cycling as a viable alternative to car use and one-way streets do not align with the Council’s desire to improve permeability and route choice for cyclists.
