Thank you for contacting Hackney Council regarding the Lea Bridge Road/Chatsworth Road junction.
This issue of vehicles carrying out u turns to avoid the banned right turn from Chatsworth Road to Lea Bridge Road has been reported to us previously.
As part of our investigations, we carried out a week-long ‘u turn’ survey at the junction to accurately ascertain the extent of the issue. The survey split the area immediately west of the Chatsworth Road/Lea bridge Road junction into 2 areas. Area 1 was up to 50 metres with area B being 50-100 metres west of the junction. Area A has recorded 1932 vehicles making a u turn, with area B accounting for 382, making a total of 2314 vehicles. The survey was conducted over 7 days (7-13 May 2025), which provides an average u turning count per day of 330 vehicles. The vast majority of which, unsurprisingly, occurred in the AM (7am-10am) and PM (4pm-7pm) peaks.
Whilst this figure without context may feel high, it needs to be borne in mind that Lea Bridge Road carries in the region of 14,000 vehicles per day. The most recent surveys for Chatsworth Road (April 2025), show over a 7 day period, in both directions, flows of over 40,000 vehicles, of which over 22,000 were northbound. This gives a daily average figure of (northbound only) of 3151 vehicles per day. Taking in account the overall use of this junction, the amount of vehicles doing this manoeuvre do not immediately give the impression of something that is endemic, but the Council does understand the potential danger this can cause, particularly when Lea Bridge Road is busy in both directions.
There has been no reported accidents as a result of any u turns being carried out, so we will keep this location under review. In terms of why the right turn from Chatsworth Road is camera enforced, this is because the right turn ban allows the council to run a green light for eastbound traffic on Lea Bridge Road. If vehicles turn right they will be running into a live traffic lane. Suffice to say this is very dangerous so the Council needs to ensure as much as possible that there is compliance with the banned turn.
