Dangerous Driving

Sent to Hackney Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6444380.
When there is traffic on Manor Rd, cars cut thru Martaban Rd thinking it is a short cut. It isn't and they drive very fast. This has caused the death of 2 cats and I worry about children. I would love to see a no entry sign at the West end of Listria Park

Thank you for your report regarding Listria Park and Martaban Road
Hackney Council has an on-going commitment to improve the street environment of the borough and the Mayor has invested significant sums in making traffic management improvements across Hackney. This has led to major improvements in the condition of our street lighting, roads and footways and these, and other measures, continue to provide substantial improvements for the benefits of residents and visitors alike. As part of this commitment, we are continually seeking ways to improve road safety across the borough.
Martaban Road has a 20mph speed limit, however, drivers should always drive according to the prevailing road conditions which will allow them to act safely where there are bends in the road or a lack of visibility. The speed limit is part of a broader 20 mph zone with self-enforcement measures such as pavement build-outs that narrows road width to slow vehicle speeds. There are also 20 mph signs and road markings to remind drivers of the speed limit.
It is also the Council’s view that the majority of motorists respect Hackney’s 20mph limits and are law abiding people and that, as with many other road traffic offences. However, it is the actions of a few inconsiderate that cause offence and possibly harm to other road users. Speeding is an offence and any violations should reported to police using the link

We would like to assure you however, that the Council does set aside money specifically to reduce the numbers of people killed and seriously injured in traffic collisions and therefore, the money we are able to provide is prioritised to locations where regrettably, injury accidents have occurred. Subsequently, we have checked the last 5 year injury accident data, as reported to the Metropolitan Police for the stretch of road within the vicinity of this location. I can confirm that the current accident record at this location shows that there have been no accidents.
Furthermore, surveys were undertaken in February 2023, which enabled my officers to analyse the traffic speeds and volumes. The results from the surveys showed that the 7 day average per day was 105 vehicles northbound and 94 vehicles southbound with average speeds of 13.5 and 13.1 mph respectively. This survey was conducted on the western arm of Listria Park north of Martaban Road. A second survey was conducted on the eastern arm just south of Martaban Road. The 7 day average per day was 47 vehicles northbound and 52 vehicles westbound with average speeds of 12 and 12.4 mph respectively. We further undertook surveys on Martaban Road where the 7 day average per day was 78 vehicles eastbound and 69 vehicles westbound with average speeds of 13.2 and 13.6 mph respectively.
The results illustrate that these roads do not carry a high volume of traffic and the speeds of vehicles are well within the speed limit.
As you can appreciate all the Council’s spending has to be evidence led as a result we are obliged to spend our money on streets that have a proven need, therefore we are unable to prioritise Martaban Road as requested.
We hope this information has been helpful to you and thank you for contacting us.
