Request for Zebra Crossing

Reported via desktop in the Non-Parking related road markings category anonymously at 11:36, Thursday 20 April 2023

Sent to Hackney Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4465683.

This section of crossing would hugely benefit from a zebra crossing. As there are x2 nursery schools & x2 schools are within 80m. The mini-round about connecting Shacklewell Lane & St Marks Rise, forces traffic to slow down at this junction anyway.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report regarding a request for a formal crossing (zebra) to be installed in place of the existing informal crossing at the junction of Shacklewell Lane and Marks Rise in the Dalston Ward of the borough.

Whilst your request is appreciated and undoubtedly you have concerns with the crossing given as you have stated the proximity of the location to a number of schools and nurseries, the accident record does not indicate a problem for pedestrians (01/01/2017 to 30/11/22). The most recent accident happened 2 metres from the St Mark's Rise and Shacklewell Lane junction on the 8th of June 2021 (time, 12:55 conditions were fine and dry) and involved a motorcycle and a vehicle. This was likely due to improper observation when emerging from a junction and not driving with due care and attention to the conditions of the road.

It should be noted that there have been no pedestrian injury accidents within the area of the current informal crossing in recent times so the present arrangement, while it may appear intimidating, appears to work safely. The Council road safety team, whilst monitoring all reported accidents that occur within the borough, focus their limited resources at locations where there are identifiable Metropolitan Police recorded accidents. Therefore, I regret to inform you that we are unable to progress your request at this time. However, we would like to thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.
